Draws for Arsenal and Liverpool

Arsenal new player Gervinho was sent off for a foul on Joey Barton as the Gunners began their English Premier League campaign with a disappointing goalless draw at Newcastle United.

Despite being without Fabregas and Nasri, Arsene Wenger's side dominated the game at St James' Park, with Gervinho impressing on his competitive debut. The Ivory Coast forward found himself at the centre of controversy 14 minutes from time, however, when he fell in the box looking to earn Arsenal a penalty.

In the ensuing action, Gervinho was shown a straight red card for striking Barton in the face, but the hosts were unable to make the most of their numerical advantage and ended the match deadlocked at 0-0.

"We request top quality. We are not scared to spend money, do not concern, but we want to know what we are getting for it," stated Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on whether or not he will look to bolster his team with more talent. "If you look at the calibre of the players I have brought to the club you will see I have not done too badly."

A sublime second-half strike from Sunderland new boy Sebastian Larsson denied a new-look Liverpool victory at Anfield in a 1-1 draw. Luis Suarez wasted a brilliant opportunity to put the Reds ahead after 7 minutes when he blazed over from the penalty spot, but he soon made amends by nodding home Charlie Adam's cross in the 12th minute.

The Reds, who had 4 new signings in their starting XI, were one-goal up at half-time, but were denied all 3 points eight minutes after the break when Larsson rifled home a sweet volley from Elmohamady's cross.
