The world number one tennis player, Novak Djokovic, ending his appearance at the Paris Masters tournament with a painful way.
He was forced to retreat in the quarter-finals due to a shoulder injury, and pave the way for the host tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
"It is with great regret and sadness I have to withdrawal from the tournament. I had to force myself to play, but after the game yesterday, my shoulder was getting worse," said Djokovic, as written in his personal website, on Friday (11/11/2011) .
The Serb also expressed apologies to the audience who had bought tickets. "This season is so exhausting for me. I played with a high level of play. Now my body needs recovery," said Djokovic.
This year, Djokovic did show looks phenomenal. He successfully won three grand slam and five Masters tournaments.
Although they had to withdraw from the tournament, Djokovic had pocketed cash bonus of 1.6 million U.S. dollars. Bonuses are awarded according to the design of ATP in an effort to invite the top players to play at the Paris Masters.
Before appearing at the Paris Masters, Djokovic also played in Basel Open. In this tournament, he also failed to top the party after being defeated Japanese player Kei Nishikori in the semifinals.
